How is the best way to upgrade my fireplace?

My husband and I just bought a house and it is 20 years old. We have some major projects on the list and this is one of them. The tile is a bland ceramic tile and does nothing to draw attention to the fireplace. It does work and I love fireplaces so I want to give this the love it deserves. Help! (This picture is from the listing. I don't have a current one of the room empty)
Perhaps bringing out all of the fireplace using color similar to what is in your wood furniture or a coordinating stone. The mantel could be changed to a darker finish and mount the TV above it. The fireplace tile could be extended to the tray above it in the ceiling.
