the surface is likely a stained varnish so the wood beneath might be a lighter colour. You could use paint stripper to remove the coating then dependant on how dark it is still, use a liming type varnish that will lighten the colour a lot. Your harware store paint department will be able to help. If using a paint stripper make sure you mask off any ajoining surfaces as it will likely strip them too if you get drips on them. Good luck 😊
Hello Simona, You could paint with Brick and Tile Paint, or Use Stick on Tile covers or Cover with Contact, or MDF and finish as required. Good luck!

Be careful what stripper you use, many are flammable. Don't use the gas fire until you're project is complete. If you can, shut off the gas to the unit.
Just paint it Home Depot sells paint for high heat
