I am gutting out my average size kitchen. Not big enough for an island. I guess I will put in pot lights. Are some better then others?

The smaller can lights are more popular than the old larger ones I have in my house.

Smaller can lights look better and get the LED ones. Better lighting and last longer. Remove the fluorescent lights over the extension and install LED pendant lights.

If the brightness is an issue look for a broad spectrum light. I've switched all of my lights to them. Much brighter and I have happier plants too. this may sound weird, but since I did, I have less blue days as it mimics natural daylight. They come in LED and most other lighting formats.

If you take out the peninsula and run the cabinetry and counter to the edge of the door trim you would have the room for a small island. Maybe a 3x3 one right in the center there, between the two rooms. That would also remove some of the dead space in the back of the cabinet, next to the range. Pot lights always look like, and I agree with the others, smaller sized ones give just as much lights and seem to be less noticeable.
