How to Make a Rope Bowl or Basket (with a Fun Twist)

Everyone needs a rope basket. It's great for holding almost everything, but is especially useful for small bits and pieces. Here's a tutorial that shows how you can make one! Quite unexpected indeed, right?
My DIY rope basket is beautiful, isn't it?
Create the bowl base
Cut the rope end at an angle and curl it up into a flat roll. Once you make a roll that’s about two inches wide, take it to the sewing machine and sew an asterisk across it with a zig-zag stitch.
Continue curling the rope around the roll, keeping it flat, and stitching the rope to the roll as you go.
Wrap a narrow fabric strap around the rope occasionally to give the basket a bit more color.
When you make the base as big as you wish it to be, tilt it to the side and continue wrapping and stitching the rope around it. The angle is up to you, make it sharp or blunt, depending on what kind of edges you desire.
Keep wrapping fabric straps in different colors around the rope occasionally to make the edges more colorful.
To finish the bowl, fold the rope back a bit and push it between itself and the bowl edge. Then stitch it.
When you show this bowl to your friends and family, they’ll probably think it’s woven, and that’s what makes it so great. Try out different ropes and different ribbon color combinations to make your perfect bowl!

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
It’s a really pretty basket💕 I was wondering what type of needle you used and what weight and type thread you would recommend
This is gorgeous! I am mesmerized by the grey thread zigzagging around the base of the basket. I'm also, like the previous question from DL, wondering whether you used a general cotton thread or something sturdier. Also I'm curious if you tried this project using different color threads? I'm thinking it might introduce a more delicate quality - or would it just fade away?
