We are hanging lanterns on our back porch and need some advice

by Ann
We're trying out these mixed lanterns and battery candles on our back porch and it is not quite looking right to me. We are replacing black wire with chains so lanterns will hang level. I have more lanterns to hang. Still fiddling with it. Suggestions? Or is it just too visually busy?

Maybe they should be spread out more, put maybe 1 or 2 large ones there? I have a friend who geniusly uses an old chandelier - she just unscrewed the lightbulbs and put battery-operated tea lights in it. It's beautiful! I think you're on the right track...just have to keep stepping back and re-evaluating! What about maybe painting them so they're not so monochromatic?

Maybe less lights..too busy...I am going to try using fishing line to hang a battery op set of lights in a bird cage (with greens inside as well) as the center light....FL will hopefully make it look like it is just floating with no visible wires...all eyes to the light

They look to close together. Maybe try different lengths as well.

Beautiful! I don't think you can have too many's the best part about sitting outdoors at night! I like the neutral color of the lanterns as I think painting them would make them way too obvious. This way they seem to float in the area. Very nicely done

If they are not over a table or sitting area I would spread them out a little. I also think they would look good at different heights rather than all level. Otherwise it's a cool idea. Very nice!

How about a few different coloured lights, cool and classic during the day and bright, fun and colourful at night.

I believe that hanging the different lamps with lengths of common black chain link would grant unity to the assortment. Let there be light :)

I would hang them at different lengths. Group some and then spread some. I would also vary the size of the lanterns. Try grouping a larger one with smaller ones.

First paint all the ceiling boards the same color. Than depending on how height the ceiling is. If it's 10' at least I would hang them at different heights. Depending on the size of your covered area would bepend on how many you would hang. When hung I would use an odd amount of hanging lights.

Painting boards white, using chains instead of wire. adding a few more lanterns, change layout of lanterns. Thanks!

Maybe wrap the wire with twine?

I like where your going with this. I agree that painting the boards all the same color. Then group you lanterns in "odd" numbers; 3, 5, 7 etc. For some reason the eye finds odd numbers pleasing. Maybe add a few in a corner at different heights? Have fun! Post photos when you get it all done, I'd love to see the finished results!

I'd hang them with white chain, and spread them out, or get more candles. Painting the top boards would look better too.

  • I agree,,,paint the other boards white and uniform all of the 'hangers'. either get white chain, or twine or whatever, just have it match. All white would look really good, since thats what the patio wood is. Maybe spread them out a bit. Hard to tell since we don't have a photo showing a larger scene.

would not paint boards - you want people to see lanterns - add more - all at different lengths spaced out not so clustered - add touch of curtian color to a few - not whole lantern but a highlight on a few - like the pointy one right up front in picture - paint top and bottom (the pointy ends) the one on the left paint every other slat and then space out the ones you paint with the ones you don't

I am not very imaginative but I rather like it just as it is. I would find it quite delightful if I were at your party...hint hint!
