I recommend making manure tea. Our first house had been built on a sand lot. We had a very thin layer of contractor's loam, but you could see sand. Commercial fertilizers were too expensive and who knows what was in them. My husband 's boss had horses and a barn. We took about a wheelbarrow full of horse manure and placed it into a 55 gallon drum (large trash barrel) and filled it up with water. Every few days we watered the front lawn with the manure "tea." We occasionally added more manure to strengthen the tea. Within a month the lawn had greened. It didn't look like a golf course, but it grew and filled in. Each successive spring we noticed the lawn more lush. However, we had to mow it more often too!

  • Spread lawn with lime

Weed and feed works very well. It kills the weeds, and greens up the lawn.

I tried the weed and feed, it FED the weeds and did not eliminate them. Perhaps I have more weeds than actual grass. No greening affect either.
