sandy soil does not retain the water.Depending on your temperatures as well you should be watering at least 20 minutes each section of your lan and everyday if it is hot.

Water them long and deep. Better to water less often but for longer periods of time to encourage deep root growth. I'd go for 30 minutes every other day.

We are also on a sandy lot and we water our lawn for 20 minutes everyday. It really helps that we have an automatic sprinkler system.

According to statistics, approximately 72% of the water we use is for exterior purposes, i.e. lawns, gardens etc. My water runs about $160/mo, which means it cost about $115/mo to keep my lawn.

The idea is to maximize the use of this watering. If you water late in the day, you will lose less by evaporation. Begin, by changing your watering schedule to water around 7-8 pm and water for 10 min. If after two weeks you begin to notice it needs more, then do 2 sessions of watering, once in the morning and once in the evening. We have a timer and we water for 3 minutes. In summer, we schedule a second in the evening for another 3 min. Never let your water run down the street.
