How to create a River rock garden?

I'm planning a DIY project to create a serene river rock garden. I'm looking for some tips with soil or landscape fabric as a base? What plants would thrive in this area? We're in southern Ontario with full sun in this area.

You had me at River Rock! I just love and truly admire river rock gardens. I'd suggest a drawing of what you'd like to have first. Our hometalk friends have created wonderful gardens for inspiration. I created one in my Arizona home's front yard starting with raking and digging a sloped pathway, laying plastic, placing river rock, bordering the "stream" with red rock boulders and actually had a wooden crossing bridge. Enjoy the fresh air, your yard, and your river rock garden. Best of luck. -
