What is your ultimate goal? I think the easiest and most elegant is just find big flat stones- lay them on the ground in a pattern and dig around the shape. Move the stone - remove the grass or dirt within the shape- lay the stone in. If you can't do that -do gravel??Helpful Reply -

Easiest? Pavers. Just pre-made flat concrete stepping stones. Set on grass as is in a line on the walkway. Not as easy, but requires a bit of work is to sink into the ground so the top surface of the pavers is level to the ground. Good luck!Helpful Reply -

Same as Allison said but I used the really big patio stones. But you have to make straight paths. Dig down same height as stone so you can mow over them.use 4 ft level to go from one to other to keep things level and side to side to keep path alignedHelpful Reply -
