I love hostas...they come in lots of different varieties and many are variegated, etc. Also astilbe if you are looking for flowers. They brighten up a shady area really well.

Begonias and (shade loving) Impatiens are two reliable choices. Impatiens once used to be all shade-loving ... but there now is another Impatiens species that like the sun, therefore, check the label before purchasing. The sun-loving type usually have a different leaf.

I will always love bleeding hearts. They do so well in shade, have beautiful leaves as well as long stems of flowers. There are many colors now and some varieties are reblooming. I don't know where you live, but I lived in a zone 7 area with lots of snow, and they returned under my deck year after year.
