You can purchase a small patch of artificial turf at your local nursery. Easy to hose down and clean up. Nails can be purchased individually

do not put mulch in a area with a new puppy.Get a outdoor carpet or mat that is easily washable

Agree with both above answers.. avoid anything thats loose, like the mulch, gravel or bark chipping. Also, think about if your going to use training. Using the outdoor mat could be useful if you can train puppy to always go on it. It's mobile so if you stay anywhere, (friend/relative house) you set the mat up outside & dog will always go to mat. My grandad used to really get upset when they looked after my dog when I went on holiday. Her wee's used to make patches all over his perfect lawn. plus larger gardens, you don't always know if your dogs 'been' anywhere until you get an angry dad ringing & complaining about the crap you didn't pick up.. lol. A specific place a dog will always go toilet, makes it a lot easier job in long run..
