Your best solution would be to build a edge to keep in the bark, there are no heavy barks,or use stones.

In our area, the only mulch available the doesn't float is cypress mulch. It is a medium brown color and looks like a mix of shredded wood and chips. It works well here.

You might be wanting something that isn't possible. Bark and heavy rain just equal movement. BUT...if you put something in the way to stop the bark from moving with the rain, then you're back in the game! For example, a few medium sized rocks would be an erosion deterrent so the soil and the bark don't keep getting washed away. Or an edge on the area where you're putting the bark - some kind of border (brick, rock, etc) that is raised up higher than your dirt and bark. THis is how you will really, really keep your bark in the garden area and not on your driveway.

I have a scalloped edgeing all the way from driveway to front porch. My property has a slight slope and water exits at edge of porch and goes around the front of porch. I do have round stepping stones here and there as bed is deep and I have to step on those stones to do some weeding. I read about someone on hometalk who made some new flower beds and she mentioned a type of bark she used that was heavier than other bark but I didnt write down the name of the bark and thought someone might have remembered about the bark that didnt float in heavy rains. The back of the flower bed is my rock house.. I had cedar bark for years but it finally needed replacing.

  • You need to keep it in place. Any sort of plastic, rock, brick edging will work hopefully.

You could use brick - and if you don't like the color, bricks can easily be painted!

I have the scalloped stone edgeing that boarders my flower bed. The flower bed is about forty feet from driveway to front porch and is on a slight slope. Ive placed stepping stones here and there all along the flower bed to stand on to weed the areas that I cant reach from kneeling on the sidewalk. The back side of bed is my rock house.
