  I need to thicken up the lawn and even out the surface. It's on a slope at the front of the house.

  Great, was the lawn aerated last fall? Depending on where you live, you could still aerate that section, overseed a little and add a topsoil and give it a go. Come next fall, aerate the entire lawn and weed and feed OR overseed and add topsoil. Whatever works best for your part of the country.

Beginning of summer when the grass is taking off.A good quality soil try your local nursery.Keep it watered well in the warmer months.
