1st...you need to graph out your property. find the lot markers, determine the size of your lot. then graph out your buildings ie house, garage, shed and any other permanent structure on your property. note the north/ south, east/west lines.2nd. on the graph paper note trees, existing gardens, septic tanks, fences, gates.3rd. have the master gardener from your county extension office pay you a visit and have soil tests done in those areas that you might like the landscaping done. if considering a water feature- consult w/ city/county/state codes.4. do you need functional landscaping--ie wind breaks? erosion control? shade on certain structures?5. are you going to prep the planting beds your self? will you need specialized equipment to make them? rototiller? shovel? wheel barrow? amendments to your soil?6. when you choose your plant materials note the mature size of the plantings. plant every new planting as if it fully mature. this will leave space for growth, and not over crowd the plantings.7. will you have a source of water for watering the new landscape elements?okay....now you have got your home work done....find at least 3 landscaping specialist in your area, show them what you've been thinking about doing. have them come and put a bid for the work your property. pro landscapers may work with certain local nurseries- not the wallmart or other discount lots..make a few calls.hope this helps.Helpful Reply -

Drive around your neighborhoods. This will show you the plants most likely to survive and give you tons of great ideas. Don't be afraid to stop and ask people about their gardens. Most gardeners love to talk shop!Helpful Reply -
