Kill all the weeds by smothering them with newspaper, cardboard or landscape fabric. Then add mulch or pebbles or gravel with stepping stones. Cut holes in the area(s) where you want to add plants. Obviously choose shade loving plants that suit your climate. Hostas would do well.Helpful Reply -

I've had good luck using pure vinegar sprayed on the weeds. it takes a few days to see the weeds wither but vinegar won't kill any plants you put in next. It's not like Round Up or anything poisonous.Helpful Reply -
