Creating an Outdoor Solar Lamp
I love taking solar lights and creating something unique and all my own with different items I have collected. Every year I create something new to add to my growing collection.
This is the inspiration for my newest solar lamp . It is an old wine jug, inscription on the bottom says Canadian Wineries. I found it in my grandparents basement when cleaning along with another one and held on to them all these years. I will be using this for my base.
This is half of an old minnow net I bought at a yard sale a few years ago. I will be using it for my shade.
I purchased this solar light from Dollarama for $2.00. So the first step is to cut down the base of the solar light.
To do this I used this small saw. Great for cutting plastic.
Here is my cut piece. It is now about 2.5 inches in length.
Next I cut the ground stake, cutting off about an inch.
In order to make the light fit into the minnow hole I had to cut the hole abit using wire cutters. Carefully pull the wire to create a wider hole. I will be spray painting my net once I have everything cut and shaped to hold my light.
Place your light down into your minnow net.
Next add your two cut pieces of your stake and press the wire firmly around the base of your light to secure in place.
Place stake into the wine jug hole. Your lamp is now complete, now I am ready to paint my net.
To paint I am using Rust-Oleum in a Black gloss.

I had initially thought of painting my wine jug but decided against it. Instead to add some color I will be using blue food coloring and filling my jug with water.
Here is my jug filled with water and a few drops of food coloring. I love the color!! Great thing about using food coloring is I can change it out throughout the summer with different colors.
Here is my lamp re assembled with painted net and colored water in my jug. Now I just need some sun to charge my light!!! This project only cost me $2.00 for the light as I had everything else on hand. Flea markets and yard sales are great places to find similar items to create your own lamp.
Here is a picture of it at dusk.( My apologies....I start my days at 4:30 am so getting a picture at night is next to impossible for me.)
