How to Build a Reclaimed Brick Patio

Sharing all the tips & tricks for how to lay an Amazing DIY brick patio over dirt using reclaimed bricks on a budget! We finally finished the brick portion of our sunken patio project. This DIY brick patio project took way longer than I ever imagined but I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out!
After taking down the deck at the start of this project we were SUPER excited to find the original brick patio still here that there was no question that we wanted to bring the old brick back.
After finishing the wood retaining wall, we started digging & leveling out the dirt inside of the walls. We had to take out many, many wheel barrel loads of dirt. Thankfully, we had lots of help!
With the kids help we brought back wheel barrel after wheel barrel after wheel barrel of grit back to our patio until we had a few inches of crushed stone & we tamped & leveled it out.
Once the Crushed stone was down & level. We brought in wheel barrel loads of sand. We laid the reclaimed brick back on top of the sand in a basket weave pattern cutting any bricks to fit with a wet tile saw. Once all the brick was laid, we swept sand on top of the cracks in between the bricks.
As you can see from this picture we were not quite done but I didn’t even wait two minutes before I started dragging our patio furniture back in, ha!
