How do we get rid of 'creeping charlie' from our lawn?

We've tried a number of applications but the 'creeping charlie' just keeps coming back. We enjoy our lawn and backyard and would like to eradicate it without adding any toxic chemicals to our environment.

You can smother it with layers of newspaper and mulch. That might help!

I also suffered with Creeping Charlie! At one point, two thirds of my lawn was taken over. I tried everything under the sun. I finally tried Spectracide Weed and Feed. I mixed a much stronger solution than the instructions said. Used a handheld sprayer and really wet the "lawn" down with no rain scheduled for the next few days. Killed the Charlie and he lawn came back stronger than ever. I still get some Charlie coming back every so often, so I pull out what I can and spot spray it along with other weeds as general maintenance.

I thank you for your suggestions but I believe all of these can have a toxic effect on the environment. Can anyone provide a natural solution that won't have any possible detrimental effects to humans, animals or the environment?

You have to remove the roots, if not the plant will return. I tilled the area first and removed the soil in a wheel barrel. Then I added new soil and planted grass seed.
