How do you keep squirrels out of bird feeder?

You don't. If you can hang from a very thin line at least 4 feet from any structure with a domed lid or topper at least 1' above feeder you have a chance. -

We ran a clothesline between 2 trees ensuring the branches weren't close enough to the feeder for them to jump from and then put holes in the bottom of pop cans and strung them along the line making sure there were no spaces between them. You could also use large clear pop bottles. Works like a charm; entertaining watching it flip the squirrels go flying and a good way to "recycle" those cans or plastic! -

Why not provide the squirrels with their own feeders? They love overripe fruit (not moldy) and their own "bird" seed - very ingenious intelligent mammals are the red squirrels ... their babies are very fun to watch ... -

In Wisconsin we made sure the squirrels had food (usually corn cobs) and then would put vasoline on the shepherds hooks that held the bird feeders. A bit entertaining to watch them slide down and it worked well but you have to keep is "greased" . -

Rub lots of oil on the post, it will make it impossible for any animal to climb up! -

secure a slinky toward the top of the pole...........it will take the squirrel back to the ground before he gets to the food......but leave some food out in a feeder for the squirrels too...... -

Add red pepper (ground or crushed) to the seeds! Mammals taste it, but birds don't seem to mind it! Even like the taste ! -

I guess I meant to continue to feed the squirrels on a regular basis ... there are sections in my yard that are "reserved" for the squirrels - the front of the yard squirrel family and the back of the yard squirrel family ... regular feedings, daily fresh water bowls for each ... there are bird baths for the birds and of course the birds steal the squirrel food :-) ... very smart animals the red squirrels -

YOU DONT!!! Oh my precious squrls get such a bad wrap. For the love of squrls and birds I use a large platter. Bigger the better. I sprinkle 1/2 cup birdseed daily. Everyone shows up to feed all together. What gets spilled is soon cleaned up. I do not fill my bird feeders anymore. It got expensive for me. Yes it rains and I have to dump the platter but I take a paper towel and wipe and on we go enjoying Gods gifts.
