How is best way to rid yard of clover & weeds so grass can grow?

Our yard has been taken over by mostly ground-covering "weeds" and looks green when cut, but that's just a quick-fix. What is best way to rid our yard of these pesky clovers & simplest, most economical way to DIY & grow a yard of grass?
We've searched professional services, but they are very expensive. Any help is appreciated. Thanks a bunch!

Is Creeping Charlie in your lawn a good thing or a bad thing?

Is there a sure-fire way to get rid of Creeping Charley?
I've used Preen in past has helped.
Preen is a pre emergent. It's used before weeds grow to prevent them from growing. I use Spectracide Weed and Feed in the hose end sprayer on my lawn. No mixing, no mess. Kills the weeds and feeds the lawn. A thicker lawn leaves no room for weeds,
In the spring, before the weeds start coming up, put down the weed and feed lawn fertilizer. You can actually get a system that you put down at four different times during the season to help the lawn. The weed and feed should help with the weeds in the spring. Check it out at your local home improvement store, they usually can advise what to use when, or your local greenhouse. Actually the clover is very nutritious for the lawn when the clippings break down on the soil.
Clover will add nitrogen to your soil, but if you have many weeds, your soil is most likely too acidic. Try adding lime to your yard, using a drop spreader. Apply half strength in one direction, then repeat, in alternate direction, making sure you overlap paths.
There are different limes available in different forms. Contact your local nursery or a county extension agent for advice specific to your area.
