My local "True Value" hardware store sells/sold an anti-ant attachment for around $7. It seems to be working just fine.

depending on the way the feeder is held,. if it is a stake or similar, you can put a top from a spray can that has a ridge around the edge and thread it over the pole. then fill it with water.
I found a moat on Amazon that attaches above the feeder. I'm going to give that a try. Your idea is excellent.
I rub Avon's Skin so soft on the feeder,keeps the ants away.
