I've used Preen before and had good luck with it. -

You can smother the weeds with newspaper, cardboard or landscape fabric then add mulch. Or just dig out by hand. In the spring you can use a preemergent like Preen. I do not use chemicals either, too many pets! -

pill them or smother them .....that is your only option, preen will not protect the garden from weeds......
