What to do about black ants in planters.

Black ants have invaded my deck and flower planters. Are they harmful to plants? How do I get rid of them without harsh chemicals?

no, not harmful to the plants - they keep the soil loose, eat other bugs or dead vegetation... you can spray the OUTSIDE of the planters with vinegar -- but do not get it on your plants!! it will kill them! -

Cornmeal. Not the cornbread mix, but just the meal. Around the perimeter of the area. They will take it to the nest, and cannot digest it thus killing the entire nest.
