I’ve used several layers of newspaper. It takes a few years for the newspaper to break down and you’ll have to replace it then but it lasts quite a while. I’m highly allergic to mold so mulch wasn’t an option. I used small peas gravel around my plants in the flower beds.Helpful Reply -

I am wondering about how using different kinds of mulch can help alleviate this problem in preventing weeds and mold from forming. How about cedar mulch; cedar is rot resistant but does break down over time. Has anyone ever tried rubber mulch? Please let me know as I am looking for solutions to the same problem myself. Weeds can still grow in pea gravel if it is not deep enough; must be 6 inches deep or more to prevent weeds from growing.Helpful Reply -

Use the weed block and at least two inches of mulch. Real or fake. Gravel will just pack the soil down.Helpful Reply -
