Castor oil mixed with a little dish soap is supposed to work. I don't know about just grated soap. Apparently, the castor oil smells terrible to the gophers. I read here once that in some places they sell castor oil granules that are easy to spread.Helpful Reply- See 1 previous

I've used grated Irish Spring soap to keep the rabbits away and it works! Apply as soon as the plants start coming up in the spring. Reapply after a heavy rain. I got tired of reapplying by about July but by then the rabbits had given up on my plants! It worked! Just don't get the soap on bricks or pavers because it leaves little whitish spots. Good luck!Helpful Reply -
