I have a large porch that sits six steps above ground. I was able to get a good deal on a bunch of heavy iron railings that would be perfect, but am not sure of the best way to attach them. Porch is concrete and I have round columns in four places. I have researched this but am getting conflicting info, and I hope someone out here has a good solution.

Abbywoof, is your porch wood or Concrete? On a wooded porch you can attach with lag screws, but be sure you are screwing into solid lumber. This may require blocking underneath. Concrete you can use RedHead bolts drilled into the concrete. This will require a hammer drill. If unsure if this a project to undertake please post photos of your porch.

If in concrete you can use Tapcons to attach the railings as long as they have the flanges at the bottom with holes drilled for accepting the screws. Use 1/4" x 3" and use a good drill to make the holes. Tapcons come in sets with the proper drill bit in the package. Buy an extra one or two as they dull fairly quickly.

I am a fan of Tapcons concrete screws and anchors. They worked for me.
