If I put a rug on my wood deck, do I need to use a pad underneath?

The only padding I can think of would be a non-skid pad for safety. -

We put down an area rug like it is. It is an out door one. They usually glue down a full size rug. My other house had one like that. -

Depends on the type of rug. A sisal rug or polypropylene would last longer outside. No pad needed for either. Polypropylene can be hosed off. -

No, it would cause any moisture to be retained and eventually smell bad. -

We used an outdoor rug, one of those ones that looks like grass. Looked very pretty and can be hosed off but found it to be very hard on the wood floor of the deck....moisture stayed under it. If I would do it again, I would get a smaller rug and take it up now and then to let the floor dry out. -

No, pads are generally used to prevent sliding on slippery floors. Your wood deck should not be slippery, so no pad is needed. -

Rugs on wood decks are there as an accent to the furniture, they can damage your deck from weather, especially rain/snow (if applicable) by trapping moisture and spores.If you have your heart set on a rug, get 1 that is small, easy to move, and has a rubber back to be sure no one slips and falls.
