Hi Marilynn, get the right tools for the job. If you don't want to hire a yard company and you have a large expanse of grass, invest in a riding lawnmower. If you have a lot of shrubs that have gotten too tall, have a crew come in and cut to the size you want. Going forward you can then cut them using electric trimmers. Too many leaves that fall? Attach a vacuum sweep to the riding lawnmower. And spread out the chores over the week. Who says everything has to be done in a day? -

Turn it into a wild flower garden. Once it starts growing it will take care of itself and you can enjoy the wildlife. -

If you can afford it, hire a neighborhood boy or girl to do most of the work for you. Or you can sometimes go to the senior center and find a handyperson who can do the work for a smaller price than hiring a landscape company. -

Christine has the right idea, what kind of sunlight do you get,follow that and buy plants that will grow and flourish in those conditions or add a large rock area. Plants probably cheaper though. If your like me and scared of bees then stay away from flowers close to home,but further away should be fine. Close to home add some pavers for a seating area. But remember that perennials are really a great way to go,they only get bought once then grow like crazy. If you have shade go with a few large growing hostas can't go wrong. Plus their shade will help block sun from allowing weeds to grow but allow them to really spread so that you get a dense full area. Regardless of the type of plants you get allow them to fill area to prevent weeds to grow. Be careful with bushes that can grow tall and leggy they look sloppy. Besides handling a hedge cutter takes strength.
