I ONLY sanded around the "entry hole" for the birds just to make it smooth for them to go in and out. I grew them 3 years ago in my garden. Slapped some valspar white exterior paint on them after the very VERY long drying, bleaching and line drying (6 months or longer) and then we attached them to our pole system that hangs 9 of them about 8-10 feet in the air and our Martins took an immediate liking to them and have been happy residents ever since.Helpful Reply -
