Anyone have experience painting birdhouse gourds? One place I read is that you should sand beforehand, another said it's not necessary. I have two that I'm ready to tackle but not sure which way to go... thank you!!!icon

The paint usually stays better if you sand first, so I'd reccomend it!

A light sanding with a fine grit paper is best before painting.

I ONLY sanded around the "entry hole" for the birds just to make it smooth for them to go in and out. I grew them 3 years ago in my garden. Slapped some valspar white exterior paint on them after the very VERY long drying, bleaching and line drying (6 months or longer) and then we attached them to our pole system that hangs 9 of them about 8-10 feet in the air and our Martins took an immediate liking to them and have been happy residents ever since.
