Paint and new hardware are great ways to refresh old cabinets.
Scrub with some dawn and then oil them with lemon or orange oil or Amish wood milk
What damage?
Could you paint them?
How are the cabinets damaged?

Without first seeing the problem, it is hard to give realistic suggestions on how you might make some repairs.
