How do I update a dresser and chest if drawers on a very tight budget?

I have a dresser and chest of drawers, that needs updating. I like the hardware, but not the color. Also is there a way bto change the finish, without stripping abd sanding?

Always paint. Did mine in semi-gloss black with glass pulls. Topped dresser and dtand with vintage ecru linen pieces
Looks very shabby chic, to me anyway.

I have 5 children, grown now so I always tried to inexpensive way to doctor things up. I would wipe them down then paint white and here is the fun part.......splatter. If it's for a kid room, bright colors and for an adult setting perhaps suttle splats of color to accompany your room. Good luck.

Yes, usually wood pieces just need to be cleaned before painting. Paint is inexpensive, esp enough for a dresser and drawers
