I spray painted canvas outdoor furniture and it turned out great. Fabric will be a bit stiffer after being painted. it has been a couple years and it still looks fresh.

Nat, that’s a great idea. Try to remove any stains from the present upholstery so they won’t affect the texture or color of the new color. It’s better to use a paintbrush instead of spray paint to avoid streaks. Brush the acrylic paint on in smooth strokes, but don’t overload the brush. Plan on two or three coats with a day between each to dry. If you want to paint a design, then you need to start with a gesso coat — equal parts of water, white glue, and paint. That will make the fabric more like canvas. Be sure to post your work on Hometalk! ☺️

Hi, Just don't out too much time and money into this project if your goal is just to get a useable chair. Lots of great 2nd hand chairs in thrift shops for $25.00. You could spend a lot more than that on supplies to paint it. And it will be very stiff afterwards.

  • I've painted a sofa before and I hated the results. It was so crunchy. I used latex paint with fabric medium. However, I have a lot of friends who have used watered down chalk paint and they love the results. Just know that the texture will change. I've also seen spray on dye by tulip in the craft store, so depending on the size of the chair, that is the method I would try.
