Before you can add filling to an existing leather sofa cushion or exchange an old, worn-out cushion core with a new replacement, you need to open up the cushion casing. Leather casings often have a hidden zipper, which allows you to easily open the cushion covering. Look at the bottom of the attached back cushions to see if you can discover camouflaged zippers. If you can't see one, run your fingers around the cushion casing to feel a cleverly concealed zipper. If you find a zipper, simply pull it open. If you can't locate a zipper, create your own opening by carefully opening a stitched side or bottom casing with a seam ripper.

For loose-fill stuffing materials, such as synthetic fibers or down-and-feather mixtures, take a small amount of your desired stuffing and fill the empty interior space of each leather casing. Continue to add more filling materials until you have the look and comfort level you want. Down-and-feather stuffed cushions sometimes contain horizontal channels that are sewn along the inside of the casing to prevent the delicate stuffing from sinking to the bottom of the cushion cavity. If that's the case, fill each channel with stuffing materials to plump the attached back cushions to your liking.

After you have fluffed or replaced your existing cushion stuffing, it's time to close up the opening. For a sewn-in zipper opening, simply zip the cushion closed, and you're done. If you had to rip open the stitching on your leather cushion covers, you need to close the opening by sewing the opening shut. Special leather needles and upholstery thread make the sewing task easy so you can securely close the gaping hole.
