Hi Pam, yes this can be done. Here is how you do it. Good luck with your project. Yes! You Can Use Chalk Paint Over Stain | Porch Daydreamer
May 12, 2018 - Step 7 – Polyurethane or Wax (or skip to optional color washing) Apply with a high quality brush in a very thin coat. Allow to dry overnight. Lightly sand with the 220 grit sandpaper overareas that feel rough to the touch. Apply 2nd coat of polyurethane. Sand any areas that feel rough and you're done!
Need a good primer to go over it. So that the new paint has something to adhere to.
If it's a wood shelf you are talking about, this might help: https://thehoneycombhome.com/covering-wood-knot-spots-with-paint/
Thank you!
Usually I just go for it with my chalk paint. I’ve painted stained wood pieces many times with no problem. Clean it really well first, and start painting.
But if you’re worried about it, you can use Zinsser clear shellac on the whole piece and then paint it. The shellac should cover any weird stains or bleed through from previous stain. Here’s a great article about it
