Decisions, decisions..cane barrel chair

Question

So I'm juggling projects but I can't help I fell in love with these. I got the set for $20 knowing that the caning was crackled (maybe I can just paint over it) and on the top where the spline was it was breaking (maybe I can repair it). So it sounded like I can just be really crafty and cut corners but that never works for long. I did the research on line about re caning but I don't know if I wanted to keep the integrity of it by replacing it OR leave it out completely and make it modern OR make a base and cushion it. What do you think? Any alternative ways? 
 If it helps my house is earthly neutral base browns/creams with silver.

I do upholstery and when I have something that has broken cane, I sometimes just cover it with the fabric I'm using on the rest of the chair. You would need to secure it with webbing, cover it with burlap, put a layer of dacron down, then the fabric - if you wanted to upholster it correctly. I think they would look good with the fabric in the places where the cane is.

Thank you,  that's a good idea. I was planning on maybe doing something like this and make bases for the side like the back frame (cardboard and foam).
