A primer that will bond with the surface you are painting, preparing it for the finish coat of paint that will be the top coat. There are primers for wood, for glass and for plastic surfaces. Also helps if you give the thing you are painting a light sanding with fine grade sand paper before priming. make sure to dust off all the dust from sanding before you prime. Read the back of the primer cans to see what they will coat will. Use the correct primer and the top coat will last a long time.
