Painted Floor

I wanted to create the feeling of an inlaid floor in a tumbling block pattern
First I created a cardboard pattern of a single block. I used it to trace the outline and locate the center point. I first stained the floor the lightest color. I marked the pattern in pencil and later in black marker.
I created a 12" border of the field color and a 2" stripe band to separate the pattern. This prevented the odd conditions that might happen as the pattern met various conditions.
I used mahogany and walnut gel stains to paint in the pattern. I kept them transparent enough to feel like wood grain. Caution: you cannot sand gell stains or you will remove the pattern! This could also be done with floor and deck paint colors. I wanted an old world parquet wood effect.
I finished with several coats of satin polyurethane to protect it. Gel stain is not the most durable, but it provided the clean edges with no bleeding that I wanted. It can be repaired.
