How to decide what color to paint dark furniture?

All my furniture in LR and DR is dark and black. I look at painted furniture and love it but how should I start. I don’t want to go crazy. Thanks in advance!

If your furniture is in good shape and not in need of repair, you can scuff with fine steel wool. Clean with TSP or denatured alcohol. Prime and paint. If it is glossy finish, you will need to use a deglosser first. If you need repairs, do that first. Make sure you purchase a high quality brush for painting to minimize brush marks, You can spray paint for a smooth finish but you need to be good with a sprayer or it will run. You might be able to use a roller, depending on the furniture lines. If you have outdated hardware, either replace or remove & spray paint.
I have painted furniture almost every color you can imagine. This "glam" nightstand was my $15 thrift store rescue.
I would look on Pinterest and find a piece you love. Then choose one piece to start with! A small one so you get the hang of it :) Milk paint is great because it's zero VOC and super safe. You could find a color you like and then follow a tutorial. I have one on milk paint here: https://www.justmeasuringup.com/milk-paint-dresser/. I painted a nasty old dresser and it turned out so pretty! Good luck :)
