How much sanding before painting?

The paint on my kitchen cabinets is about 15 years old so I'm repainting them. I bought some water based alkyd paint and bonding primer from a paint store. Employee told me all I needed to do was sand the doors dull and put the new paint on them. I started standing with my palm sander and realized the paint was really unlevel. By the time I got everything dull, there were some bare wood spots showing through. How much sanding do I need to do? Am I better off sanding down to the wood and starting over or do I need to be sanding by hand?

yes I believe you probably do need to go down to the wood. You can rent sanders

normally when painting anything i learnt if you just take the shine off with sand paper the new paint will stick fine and thats not too much effort, hope all goes well x

You need to sand it smooth but not necessarily to the wood. Sanding roughen up the wood so that the paint has something to stick to,good luck

usually just take the shine off, but in a kitchen I would also use TSP or krud cutter to make sure there was nothing in the nooks and crannies :)

I agree with Cowan! Krud Cutter will make sure that the paint is clean and help remove the shine! Then paint with the primer! Good luck!
