How to choose a cabinet color?

I just painted my bathroom a neutral tan color which matches my counter top. I want to update the vanity by painting. How do I choose a color? Should it be Dark, light, or to match a color in the counter???

Can't afford to change out the counter...it is ok...have some grayish, pinkish, and tan tones

Pick a lighter tone that works with all you have going on and with floor.
Google Pinterest and you will see thousands of pics. The word "match" alerts me. This is what you don't want to do.
Sandra, if you're like me, seeing pictures of what others have done helps me choose what I like! Take a look at these many pretty baths! By the way, I love the color of your wall.

I suggest a light grey. The room doesn't look like it has a window and so you want a bit of brightness for balance, plus you have the white toilet and sink. I've got my Sherwin Williams fan deck out and I'll give you a few to try. Egret White SW 7570, On the Rocks SW7671, Silverpoint SW7653, Silverplate has a little taupe in it SW 7649. Here's a little secret; you can go to the Sherwin Williams store and their samples are 1 quart satin finish for $9 I think. You can paint that whole cabinet with a quart. If it's a powder room then satin is fine but if it has a shower and gets lots of humidity then you'll have to get a semigloss. Lowes has SW but it's not the same quality as the store and the samples are half a pint.
I think you are on your way to a really pretty room, but I think you have plenty of tan/brown in the room. Also, all your colors are in the medium range so I think you need to go with a very pale or very dark gray for the vanity. Pick a shade that complements the grays that are in the countertop.
Here is the new shower curtain and possible picture (not sure yet about that) still open to color ideas for the vanity. 😀
