How to use gel stain

I have two "matching" Hitchcock chairs. One was in my daughter's home and the other one was in my home without direct sun. The wood has bleached out evenly but is like another wood. I've ordered gel stain to darken that wood but don't know what to do.... do I have to sand the legs and exposed arm sections before gelling them? Help if you can.

I would gently sand all parts you plan to stain, just to get rid of any last bits of shine from other products and having a fresh surface on which to apply the gel. Go to the General Finishes website. They have lots of videos on "how to with gel stain". They also make a great gel stain. -
