I think grey caught on because it is a neutral color that lends itself to matching with many other colors.

Imho, the gray trend will go away. Better Homes and Garden magazine announces the color trend of the year--every year. And we follow along, rushing out to buy zebra striped throw rugs, or a particular shade of pink for every room in the house. I am fighting the gray trend for myself, but tends usually last less than ten years, which is about as often as most homeowners paint the entire inside of their homes. Color shall rise again! Best wishes 😇

My living room walls are Revere Pewter, my rug is a red oriental and the art on the walls is very colorful. The Frey provides a nice neutral background.

Grey is a nice, calming neutral color. It goes with just about every other color, that is why it is so popular. It won't be boring if you use it as a "blank canvas" for colorful accessories, rugs, and furniture.
