Take a good photo to the paint department of your home improvement store and ask for their advice. They can show you the best paints/stains and application tools to do a professional job.

Yes you can. You can also white wash it for a different look. Simply use 2 parts paint to 1 part water then paint as usual. Using a white wash can allow some of the coloring of the rock to still come through. Wishing you the best.
