How do I go about painting my dated looking brick fire place?

A friend of ours thinned down white paint and dabbed it on the bricks! It looks like old brick and is beautiful!Helpful Reply -

Clean the bricks well with heavy duty cleaner, prime with oil base primer, then paintHelpful Reply -

Would it devalue my fireplace to paint it out in white? It is currently gray brick.

We have built-ins on either side of our gray brick fireplace, and I would love to paint the fireplace out in white. However, my husband feels it would be a bad idea.
