First take a stiff brush to the brick to knock off little pieces....To paint brick you need a paint with primer in it...it will take 2 coats...you will need a brush for the groutline and a fluffy roller for the bricks.....tape off the wall beside the brick.....when I did mine I painted wall white and the hearth medium gray to hide the dirt from the ashes.....happy painting. You can also mix water with the paint and give it a "white wash" effect. That's what I did with our fireplace wall because I don't like the look of painted brick. (That's just me, of course) Here's a pic of what I did part way through...... You can see that the "white wash" made it look lighter. You can do even more if you want. I painted it on and wiped it with a damp sponge then did the black part with a kids stipple type brush. You use equal parts of latex paint & water but you can make it thicker or thinner if you want.

A little chalk paint and heat resistant paint should do the trick-https://www.hometalk.com/diy/living-room/fireplaces-mantels/fireplace-whitewash-project-27546793
