I want to repaint my metal kitchen cabinets. Do I need to strip all the old paint off first-about 5 layers of it?

  • To have the best possible outcome you need to make sure the metal cabinets are free from any peeling paint, grease, dirt, etc. To avoid the unevenness on the metal if you just paint over the paint, I would strip it down. I would go look for strippers safe for metal. Then when you go to paint them again, make sure to clean them really well, do a couple light coats of a good primer and a couple light coats of paint (I like Rustoleum 2x spray at Home Depot). Good luck

If you want the cabinets to look even you will have to strip them. There is a product sold in Home Depot called citristrip which is a lot safer then some other chemicals and can be used on metal.

If the old paint is chipped, its best strip so that new coat is smooth. If you dont mine the chipped areas showing thru, then prime and paint.

Try Rustoleum Cabinet Kit...comes with everything in one box, including the Deglosser, Base Coat, glazing gel, top coat, cheese cloth (for use with the glazing gel) and 2 stir sticks...did my metal back door and it looks marvelous! Highly recommended!

Probably the best idea is to strip them but it would also be the most time consuming . I would first examine them very carefully for chips in the finish or any real rough areas . Then I would sand them down with a palm sander starting with about 80 grit paper and eventually progress to about a 320grit for the finish . Fill any chips with some auto body filler sanding smooth with the 320paper or maybe some 400 grit and then paint away putting on two coats of top coat . Let the first coat dry overnight if possible , put on the second coat letting it dry thoroughly and reassemble .... Good luck

If you're repainting simply because you don't like the color, you can probably get away with adding that 6th coat of paint. If, however, the old paint is chipping and/or flaking you should definitely strip the paint off.
