Judy, I have done this before with varying degrees of success. My first hint is to definitely have patience and a steady hand. You will have to remove doors, drawers and hardware. Lightly scuff the surfaces with sandpaper (120 grit) wrapped around a block of wood. This allows the paint to stick to the surface. I then primed the surfaces using the required primer. I.e. oil based primer for oil based paint, or latex based for latex paint. Brush or spray on your paint. Don't rush, multiple thin coats of paint are better than one heavy coat. My best advise, I think, is to just do one door at first to get the hang of what you are doing and the appearance that you are looking for. Don't forget to mask off any surfaces you don't want painted. As I said, have patience. and believe that you can do this. While the home centers are good with some great people, I would also suggest that you check out the actual paint stores, such as Sherman Williams, etc. They tend to have better quality paint and very good people that are more than ready to help.I'll add, at this point that I'm not a pro, by any means. Just a man that loved a talented, decorative woman. She'd come up with the ideas . Hope this helps and good luck.Helpful Reply -

I like using a primer called 123 it sticks to shiny surfaces and then allows the paint to stick to it.Helpful Reply -

You could try chalk paint as well. You just clean the surface well and paint, it adheres well to most anything. Then cover it with a polyurethane for protection.Helpful Reply -

You need to de-gloss the shine in order for paint to adhere. Light sanding and then prime and paint. Follow up with a light coat of poly, since it is in the kitchen and will get more wear than other rooms. I use Sherwin Williams paint and also General Finishes gel stain and milk paint. Good luck with your project.Helpful Reply -
