Which kind of paint is the best for painting kitchen cabinets?

I see a lot of painted cabinets, but I don’t know which paint is really the best for cabinets. I’m wondering which kind of paint holds up the best. Also, I want to paint mine a shade of white or off white, so color ideas and pictures are appreciated as well. Thanks so much!
