Use a caulking gun, not a tube of caulk. Cut the tip at an angle. After applying the caulk in a long line, use your dampened index finger to smooth the caulk into a straight line. Keep the caulking gun moving. If there is a little gap, it will smooth out when you use your finger. Use a wet rag to wipe the excess off of your finger after each pass. Make sure that the caulk looks just as you want it to when it is dry. You can't sand caulk once it cures. If you have large gaps, do one pass, smooth it and let it dry. Then go back over if you need more.
Put 2 long parallel strips of masking tape flanking where you are caulking. Caulk, let dry and then remove the tape. You should have a perfect caulk line.
You should definitely use a caulking gun. I would smooth the line of caulk with your finger before it dries.
