Wood putty fill the defects, sand to level smooth the fill, prime and paint should work great.

This wood filler putty is my favorite, others are too sandy‘ some crack and are brittle and make an inconspicuous repair most difficult.
Squeegee in some with an old gift card/or credit card allow to dry, sand if needed prime and paint.

You can patch it before refinishing it, here is a good blog article on this:

Since a veneer is a thin strip or sheet of material like wood, you can buy the same or a similar sheet to glue in place of the old material, or even go with marble or glass or tile. ☺️

You don't need to replace your veneer if you're going to paint. Just fill it in and sand it smooth. Also, veneer can be removed. Older furniture often has nice but cheaper wood underneath the veneer.

Never paint over wood veneer on an otherwise quality piece of furniture, especially an antique. If not, find some old veneer from another source, and peel apart the correct thickness you need, cut to shape and glue in place. The later wood fill stage will be easier to fill and sand. Takes a little longer this way, but you will love the finished results.
